The lecturer for our three day Pharmacology Masters Course was Dr.Richard Wynn, co-author of the Drug Information Handbook for Dentistry as well as numerous other textbooks and handbooks. He is also professor of Pharmacology at University of Maryland Dental School.

I reall enjoyed this course. He initially reviewed the top one hundred drugs that changed the world. Interesting story- Fluoride is one of the top 100 drugs. The idea of using fluoride was first developed by a young dentist named Dr. Frederick McKay in 1901. He began his practice in Colorado Springs, CO where he found many of his patients' teeth mottled brown. Despite this brown rotten look they were strongly resistant to cavities. A large scale scientific study was initiated in 1945 in four cities in the US. By 2000, 162 million people in the US get water from a fluoridated supply. Controversy exists with the profluoridationists and the antifluoridationists whom are equally very passionate about their belief in effects fluoride. As a dentist I have seen much more good come from fluoride!

Also interesting was the herbal and anti-oxidant free radical info as well as other info.

In depth he covered treatment of dry mouth. General Treatment strategies of Dry Mouth include:

1)See your dentist regularly

2)Perform oral hygiene as instructed

3)Monitor your mouth for oral candidiasis

4)Avoid sugary food and drinks

5)Frequently sip fluids

6)Use fluids while eating

7)Avoid caffiene

8)Protect dry lips

9)Use a humidifier
